Queenstown Lakes District Council wants to water down Crate Day celebrations after alcohol-fuelled trouble in previous years.

Celebrated on the first Saturday of December every year, Crate Day encourages people to try and make their way through a crate filled with bottles of alcohol.

But Queenstown has had enough of the rowdy behaviour and piles of rubbish left behind. The local council is proposing extending daily alcohol ban periods and a total alcohol ban on the day.

Alcohol licensing team leader Sian Swinney says they're trying to limit disorderly behaviour.

"The community providing feedback where they've felt intimidated and unsafe and levels of intoxication, alcohol related harm, have also been a concern."

Ms Swinney says they're not stopping people from taking part in Crate Day, but it won't be on public property.

"[There's] still facilities available for people to be able to consume alcohol on crate day in their home or in licenced premises," she said.

The council will meet to discuss the proposal on Thursday.
