The resource consent hearing for a controversial chicken factory in Northland has been suspended.

Tegel Foods has applied for resource consent to develop and operate a broiler farm, which would house about 1.3 million chickens, near Dargaville.

The consent has been vehemently opposed by local group Kaipara Community Association, citing adverse environmental effects.

The Northland Regional Council and the Kaipara District Council have suspended the processing of the consents after Tegel said it needed more time to prepare for the consent hearing, originally set down for August 8.

According to the legislation overarching the process, the Resource Management Act, Tegel has up to 130 working days until the suspension can be lifted.
