Robert Nelson who was fatally shot on Sunday morning has been described by his sister as someone bright and beautiful with a lot of potential.
Police were called to a house around 1am on Sunday morning where 23-year-old Robert was fatally shot and a 20-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were also seriously injured.
The sister said Mr Nelson and his girlfriend were in bed at the time of the shooting. He was said to have shielded his girlfriend from the bullets. She is now in a critical state.
The sister has described her late brother as "a beautiful, bright, lovely gentle giant".
A keen Muay Thai fighter, he was about to start an apprenticeship as a chef and move up into a new restaurant.
"[He] has touched so many people's lives," she told Newshub. "The world won't be the same without him and he's going to be missed by so many people in the Waikato area."
Police are still in the area looking for the shooter.
