Hundreds of Auckland homeowners may have to re-apply for resource consent, the Auckland Council announced at a meeting on Wednesday.
The problems with the consents stem from work done in areas categorised as being of special character under the Unitary Plan. The Council admits special character zone rules were given more importance than the single residential rules.
Four-hundred-and-thirty homeowners have been affected, and some may have to stop work on their property. They will be able to reapply for new consents free of charge in the next few weeks.
However the Council warns some of the property owners who reapply may not get a new resource consent. Their current consents could also be open to legal challenges.
The Council says it is now operating in compliance with the rules while issuing consents.
