Police were called to an Auckland premier football game after a brawl broke out between spectators and players on the sideline.
On Wednesday night the Northern Regional Football League premier men's game between Manukau United and Three Kings had to be abandoned due to the violence.
The brawl, which broke out on the sidelines of McLennan Park, left Three Kings player Fabrizio Tavano bloodied and scratched, Stuff reports.
He was sent off the field after a tussle with another player after his teammate was fouled by a Three Kings player with only 10 minutes left in the match.
As Mr Tavano walked off the pitch up the hill toward the changing rooms, Manukau coach Kevin Fallon told Stuff he saw him throw something at a nearby spectator.
By the time he had reached the top of the hill the fight had broken out.
Three Kings coach Chris Milicich did not see what happened but said he turned around and saw Mr Tavano "rolling down the hill with five spectators trying to beat him up".
A number of players then ran off the pitch to Mr Tavano's aid.
A police spokesperson confirmed officers attended the incident and spoke to those involved. No arrests were made and no further action was being taken, police say.
