Police have launched a homicide investigation after the death of a two-year-old on Wednesday evening.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said in a statement police were called to a property in the Northland town of Mangawhai around 8:15pm on Wednesday after the child died at the address.
A 30-year old man has been arrested and charged with assault on a child. He will appear at the North Shore District Court today and police are not ruling out any further charges.
Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the death.
The incident has been referred on to the coroner.
