The adult whale left stranded on a Northland beach has been euthanised.
The whale and its now-dead calf were marooned on Sunday morning at Ripiro Beach, outside Dargaville. The calf died on Monday, leaving the larger whale weak and alone.

A Department of Conservation (DoC) spokesperson told Newshub earlier on Tuesday that the decision had been made to euthanise the whale after consultation with the local iwi Te Rorora and Te Uri o Hau, Project Jonah and other whale stranding experts.
DOC says its staff and iwi will stay with it on the beach tonight before it is cut up and buried on Wednesday.
