Canterbury residents have been left stunned after the sky lit up with a blazing orange object.

Witness Amanda Coster saw it in the sky heading towards Mt Grey on Monday, and believes it was a meteor.

She described the object as "burning up and coming down" with an "orange glow to it", according to Stuff.

Her family heard a "sonic boom" as it passed overhead - alarming the family dogs, Stuff reports.

Others have described seeing the mysterious object as well, as far away as Nelson.

"I saw it but it wasn't toward Mt Grey, it was to the West more toward Oxford," one person commented online.

"I never heard a 'boom' though. They have been seen before as the sun goes down where it is a vapour trail catching the last light to the west."

The object has yet to be identified, but people are already offering options.

"Maybe it's the Tesla returning," was one view.
