Whanganui police are still hunting for the culprits behind a gang-related fatal shooting.
A 27-year-old man was killed on Puriri Street in Castlecliff on Monday, sparking the investigation.
Local residents say they heard around six shots at about 9am, and then police swooped into the area.
The Armed Offenders Squad and dogs squads were at the scene - while there were a number of patched gang members in the area.
There has been an unofficial truce between warring gangs, according to residents in the area, and they fear that this incident could spark tensions between them again.
Extra police have been brought in from outside the area and Whanganui officials are urging calm.
Deputy mayor Jenny Duncan says residents shouldn't be alarmed.
"We have that strong police presence here in Whanganui, which is of course very reassuring for our usually very quiet community," she told RadioLIVE.
"We're just waiting for the Police to complete their investigation and apprehend those responsible."
