A bus has fallen into a large sinkhole in Newlands, Wellington, requiring the help of a crane to retrieve it.
The back wheels of the bus became lodged in the hole at around midday on Link Rd in the northern suburb.
Wellington Water customer operations group manager Gary O'Meara said a water main had burst on the street, causing the asphalt to weaken.
As the bus drove over it, the weight and pressure caused the hole to form, sending torrents of water gushing into the street.
Hours later the bus was still stuck, with a crane brought out to the scene to help to draw it out of the hole.
