Tuesday marks the eighth anniversary of the first big earthquake in Canterbury, which struck in September 2010.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit at 4:34 am on September 4, rocking the region and causing widespread damage - destroying homes and leaving others uninhabitable.
The earthquake's epicentre was 40 kilometres west of Christchurch just south-east of Darfield.

One of Newshub's first news reports shows the widespread damage across Christchurch, including extensive liquefaction, and torn apart roads and homes across the cities suburbs.
Many large aftershocks followed the quake including the February 2011 earthquake that killed 185 people.
