Weather: Warm temperatures hit New Zealand

Warmer weather is on the way after a sudden cold snap last week - with temperatures spiking above 20degC.

New Zealand is already seeing swings by as much as 8degC compared to normal, and by the end of the week many regions will be hotter than what we should expect.

Inland parts of the South Island are already enjoying weather a few degrees above average, and this is going to increase.

"The extra warmth, following the colder southerlies, is due to a west to nor'west flow which will become blustery in exposed places and push temperatures up in the east as the week goes on," Weather Watch says.

"By Wednesday the westerlies will push some inland eastern areas up in to the low 20s and over the coming days and into the weekend this trend should continue.

"By Thursday and Friday and into this weekend Hawke's Bay may be in the low 20s, maybe climb towards the mid-20s should the nor'westers arrive with afternoon sun."

NIWA has posted images of the expected sea-level pressure trend over the next two weeks, and says we can expect "generally tranquil weather" to come.

"This pattern will also lead to drier than normal conditions for most of the country over the next two weeks," it says.

"That is depicted in the second image, with dry anomalies (brown colours) widespread across most of New Zealand."
