Stormy weather causes havoc across the country

Interislander ferries have been cancelled for the rest of the day due to heavy winds and large swells.

Only two sailings managed to make it from Picton to Wellington on Friday, and one of them technically left on Thursday.

Stormy weather has been causing trouble across the country since Wednesday, including heavy snow to parts of the South Island.

"The cold southerly flow is making its way up the South Island bringing snow down to low levels for parts of Canterbury and Marlborough. A heavy snow warning is in force," MetService wrote on Twitter.

Niwa has warned the north of the country won't be missing out on the bad weather, with blustery wind expected in the Wairarapa and Auckland.

"It will be a very blustery affair in Wellington/Wairarapa with some powerful gusts for Auckland too. Hold onto your [hats]," a spokesperson wrote on Twitter.

Aside from the existing heavy snow warning there are also strong wind warnings in place for Taranaki, the Kaikōura Coast, Marlborough Sounds and Wellington.

A strong wind watch is in place until 11pm for Westland.

There is a heavy snow watch in place in Taihape from 11pm on Friday night to 7am Saturday morning.
