Primary school teachers and principals will take part in national rolling strikes in the week starting November 12.
It comes after NZEI Te Riu Roa's members "overwhelmingly" voted in favour of the strikes.
Last month, teachers and principals resoundingly rejected the latest Ministry of Education offers, which failed to address the need for a significant pay jolt, teacher workload or resourcing for children with additional learning needs.
The strike action will consist of rolling one-day strikes throughout New Zealand in November.
NZEI principals' lead negotiator Louise Green said the level of industrial action by teachers shows just how severe the crisis at New Zealand schools is.
"We're at crisis point for recruiting and retaining teachers in this country," she said. "I've had principal colleagues in tears with the stress of trying to ensure a teacher in every classroom.
"Meanwhile the huge workload and lack of resources for children with additional learning needs is driving teachers out of the profession."
NZEI teachers' lead negotiator said those striking understand how much disruption it will cause, but it shows how desperate they are for change.
"However, we all know what is at stake, and the importance of standing our ground on fixing the crisis in teacher recruitment and retention. Our students deserve better, and this Government can do better - their $5.5 billion surplus confirms it," he said.
