Where bus strikes will hit Auckland commuters hardest

As the pay dispute between bus companies and unions boils over into strike action on Tuesday, Auckland Transport has issued a list of the affected routes.

Industrial action will affect selected AT Metro buses, including the cancellation of some services - and commuters have been warned to "expect the unexpected".

"Due to industrial action by First Union members, some services operated by Ritchies Murphy and Pavlovich Coachlines will not operate on Tuesday 23 October," Auckland Transport says.

"School services and express services will operate as normal."

Drivers in the Waikato will also be striking after negotiations failed, while Wellington bus drivers will follow suit on Thursday.

Jon Reeves from the Public Transports Users Association warns bus timetables will be irregular as drivers go on strike.

"There may well be, of course, buses which just don't arrive at all," he told RadioLIVE on Monday.

"Look at plan B: maybe a long walk or bike ride; car-pooling with some friends to work or places tomorrow, which is unfortunate."

First Union's Jared Abbott told Newshub earlier the drivers he represents are tired and overworked.

"They're really frustrated about having to work for such a low income in a job that's got a shortage of bus drivers and very demanding in terms of work hours," he said.

But Ritchies' Transport director Andrew Ritchie claimed he had no idea why drivers are striking.

"The union is just telling lies, they're incapable of doing anything else," he said.

Mr Ritchie said he's concerned about the effect a strike could have on the public.

"What I'm really concerned about is the health and safety of the public now, and I'm actually to the point where I think we might be better to lock them out and reduce the risk back to the public," he said.
