Images of the crash that claimed one life in a Waikato crash early Tuesday morning reveal a tragic scene.
The truck driver involved in the crash is at the police station shaken but unhurt after his truck collided with a car in the early hours of the morning.
Newshub understands the Halls Refrigerated Transport truck was travelling north when it collided with a Toyota Altezza on State Highway 1, 250m north of the Bull Ring Café.
Police were initially concerned there were multiple fatalities, but have confirmed there was just one person in the southbound car, which was just north of Atiamuri.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2:30am and are still working to clear the road.
Police say both vehicles caught fire.
Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said scene examination is ongoing, and the road is likely to stay closed for several more hours.
He said heavy haulage equipment would be needed to move the vehicles.
Diversions are still in place, directing traffic west onto SH30 and through Tokoroa on SH32.
There is signage for those who do not know the routes.
