People in two vehicles were seen shooting fireworks at each other moments before a fire broke out near West Melton near Christchurch.
The fire broke out along a hedge where the fireworks hit and quickly spread, damaging several hedges and gardens and threatening properties forcing those inside to evacuate.
A ride-on lawn mower sitting near one of the burnt hedges was incinerated as a result of the fire.

Now police are seeking the occupants of the vehicles.
Senior Constable Chris Caldwell of Rolleston Police says a witness reported the vehicles appeared to be chasing each other on Newtons Rd at 7pm on Saturday.
"It seems likely the occupants of the both vehicles knew each other, and they may not have realised their actions started a fire, as they had fled before it started," Senior Constable Caldwell says.
"However, their actions were extremely dangerous given the high winds at the time."
One vehicle is described as a silver BMW with 18 inch mag wheels.
The other vehicle is described as a distinctive blue Mazda RX8 with tinted windows, black wheels and has white writing on an angle on the rear windscreen.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
Any members of the public with information on these vehicles or this incident are urged to contact Christchurch police on 03 363 7400.
