A man has been found slumped against his airbag with his foot still on the accelerator in a car vs power pole collision in Wellington.

The man, described as being in his 60s or 70s, crashed into a power pole on Burma Road in Khandallah.

A mechanic who was first on the scene said the car was "revving its guts off" when it came to a stop.

"He was passed out against the airbag, the doors were locked, he had his foot on the gas full throttle," Eden Maniapoto said.

"I couldn't get in the car, so I grabbed a hammer out of my tool box and smashed a window and shut the engine off," he said.

Mr Maniapoto said it appeared the driver passed out with his foot on the gas.

"Luckily the car jumped out of drive on impact, or it could have been worse.

"Another driver saw him coming and luckily swerved out of the way, otherwise it would have been a head-on."

Wellington Free Ambulance says one man is being transported to hospital with minor injuries; two other people are being treated at the scene.
