Tourism NZ says the global coverage of the death of a British backpacker is "unlikely" to hurt the local tourism industry.
A body likely belonging to Grace Millane in west Auckland's Waitākere Ranges on Sunday, dashing hopes the 22-year-old would be found alive. She went missing the weekend before last.
Media worldwide picked up on the story, with coverage in outlets such as CNN, BBC News and the Daily Mail.
Tourism NZ communications manager Candice Johanson told Newshub it was an "unimaginable" tragedy.
"Our thoughts are with Grace's family and friends at this unimaginable time and we acknowledge the New Zealand police for their continued dedication to this case.
"The event is unlikely to have an impact on arrivals figures but it is being covered in global media, particularly in the UK, and this is likely to encourage people to be more cautious about travelling alone or be extra cautious about their activity in New Zealand."
She said New Zealand is "generally viewed as a safe destination, but events like this can erode this reputation".
"We want all visitors to have an incredible and safe experience in the country so we promote safe travel via some tips on newzealand.com."
Ms Millane arrived in New Zealand in late November in the second leg of a year spent backpacking around the world.
Ms Johanson said her probable tragic death was unlikely to have a negative impact on tourism, one of our biggest industries.
Det Insp Scott Beard says Ms Millane's father, who is in New Zealand, is struggling.
"Any father, any parent in this situation will struggle. I feel for him - I have a daughter in my 20s. We're putting a lot of support around him. It's difficult - he's here with a brother from England, and the rest of the family are back home."
A 26-year-old appeared in court on Monday, charged with her murder. He was granted interim name suppression.
