New Zealand Civil Defence has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake south-east of the Loyalty Islands.
The earthquake was at a depth of 10km and struck at 5:18pm on Wednesday night.
The Loyalty Islands are located north of New Caledonia, which is still threatened by a potential tsunami.
A worker at a Hilton hotel on the nearby island of Noumea said they had felt something, but it was not significant and locals hadn't been told to evacuate.
The Consul General of New Zealand in Noumea confirmed they also felt a quake and a tsunami alert was in effect.
"We have this confirmation from civil defence, and have been told it will be affecting the east coast of New Caledonia."
In a tweet, the Civil Defence said if the earthquake had generated a tsunami which could threaten Aotearoa, it would not arrive in New Zealand for at least three hours.
