The video titled: Planking | A Historical Footnote was posted on Tuesday (local time) and has since received almost 500,000 views.
"They call it planking. The practice of laying on your front, completely still, for social media kudos," the video describes.
"So John Key, chief 'cuz' of New Zealand decided to take things into his own hands.
"He does a fine 'how do you do, fellow kids?' and uploads this slightly ominous picture of his son planking… and, you did it. You killed the meme."
The video references some injuries that were sustained when people were attempting to plank in precarious locations.
One Australian man fell off a five-storey balcony while trying to plank on a ledge in 2011.
This incident and other severe injuries sustained from planking meant the craze was banned in hospitals, workplaces and schools worldwide.
