A rental advertisement for a Wellington flat has drawn ridicule online for its squalid conditions.
The four-bedroom "NY-style loft unit with open plan kitchen/living" in Wellington's Te Aro is being advertised for $785 per week, just shy of $200 per room.'
While not extortionate for Wellington rental prices, the rent is being described as "an absolute joke" due to the condition of the apartment.
Commenters on Reddit likened it to "New York at the height of the Great Depression".
"This place is indeed a bit more like East German post-industrial squat than NY loft," another person said.
Others mentioned the sad state of rentals in Wellington saying "it's a bit sad that they obviously didn't even try to clean up at all before taking the photos, and they know people will go for it anyway."
One comment on the post references the bedrooms, saying that the listing must have a "pretty stretched" definition of what makes a bedroom, due to the windowless, featureless room pictured in the listing.
However, most agreed that due to the rush to find housing once students return "come January, this will look like a five star hotel to a lot of people".
