"Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin. Notice I'm saying southern cities and towns? North Island [is] not so rosy at the moment," he said.
"Wellington much of the day looking pretty good, Palmerston North not bad. Auckland, not so great. It starts off alright at the moment but then it does get a bit wet off and on, a bit showery."
But Ashburton will be the best place to be on Christmas Day due to fine weather and a balmy temperature.
"South is best. Christmas Day at the moment as it stands looks like plenty of sunshine [in the south]. The place to be overall, I would go to Ashburton - 25degC and sunshine on Christmas Day."
Thankfully for those stuck in the North Island, the New Year is expected to be better than the end of 2018's changeable weather.
"Warmer than average temperatures. Still a front or two possible for the lower South Island," forecaster NIWA said on Monday.
