A 49-year-old man has been arrested near where the Walters Bluff fire broke out.

Police have confirmed the man was arrested for disorderly behaviour during a police operation, and was issued a pre-charge warning.

The fire broke out on Walters Bluff near Nelson city at 2.44pm on Friday.

Fire and Emergency staff raced to the scene.

A number of resources that were fighting the fire in Pigeon Valley were redirected to save houses in the line of fire on Walters Bluff.

About six helicopters with monson fires were sent to fight the blaze, bucketing water out of the sea to try extinguish it.

The bluff is a dry grassy area that is also a popular walking track through eucalyptus trees.

The fire has yet to be extinguished.
