Six people have been injured after a horror crash in the Coromandel on Saturday.

Three cars were involved in the accident, which happened on the Kopu-Hikuai Rd just after midday.

The road, also known as State Highway 25A, is a rural route connecting the Firth of Thames to the east coast.

St John tweeted that it sent two vehicles to the scene to help the wounded.

It says one person is in a serious condition and another has moderate injuries.

They have been transported to hospitals in Waikato and Thames. Another four people received minor injuries.

Police say the road is blocked. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to expect delays.
