Police are urging motorists to take "extreme care" while driving in the Thames-Coromandel area after a massive oil spill.
Emergency services were called to the incident on State Highway 25 at 1:40pm on Monday afternoon. It's not yet known where the oil came from or how it spilled onto the road.
The oil stretches from the top of Kopu-Hikuai Rd to at least Tairua, a slippery stretch of 28km.
Contractors are currently at the scene working to clear the oil, but drivers are asked to be extremely careful while making their way through the area.
