A Northland resident has been left "extremely devastated" after one of her horses was killed with a "single shot to the heart".

Keriana Te Paa shared photos of the animal and explained it had been left for dead early Friday in Ahipara.
She believes it was not a random shooting.
"They were grazing in the bridge paddock, [on the] corner of Roma Road," she wrote.
The attack follows a miniature horse being stabbed more than 40 times in an Otago paddock.
In February, police were notified of the attack on Star, 10, who lives in the seaside settlement of Waitati near Dunedin. The horse survived after initially sustaining the injuries however died later.
Te Paa urged anybody who knows anything get in touch with them ASAP.
