Ford Mustang leads Auckland police on high-speed chase

Police were confronted with a high-powered chase on Wednesday morning after a wanted man fled in a red Ford Mustang.

"At around 5:50am this morning, a vehicle was spotted in Auckland's CBD by Police that was connected to man who was wanted for breaching his bail conditions," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"Police attempted to stop the vehicle however it fled. Eagle followed the vehicle for some time and eventually a pursuit was initiated."

The driver led police to Sylvia Park, where a witness shot a thrilling video of the chase.

"When I first saw it there were 18 cars, 14 marked and four undercover," the witness told Newshub.

"It was going pretty fast, it was going as least 60-70 around Sylvia Park. On the main road it was going real fast, at least 100km/h."

Video supplied to Newshub by the witness shows the Mustang returning about 20 minutes later for another lap, this time with its rear tyres blown out. Multiple police vehicles are in pursuit with their sirens on.

"You can hear the sound the tyres make in the video. I thought the helicopter was shooting at it," the witness told Newshub.

"He was all over the place."

Police say they captured the man and took him into custody.

"The vehicle was stopped in Mt Wellington and a male has been arrested for breaching his bail conditions," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"We cannot rule out the possibility of further charges."
