Toddler and infant named as victims of fatal Ashburton crash

Police have named the three victims of Monday's fatal crash in Ashburton.

Two of the deceased were under two-years-old.

They were 19-month-old Te Awanuiarangi Shayelous-Jay Matenga Tapiata-Harmer and eight-month-old Wysdom Amara Francis Tony Jane Tapiata-Harmer.

A 30-year-old woman, Chante Alissa Harmer, was also killed in the crash.

All three were from Ashburton.

The crash occurred just after 10am on Monday.

A station wagon and a ute collided at the intersection of Mitcham Road and Hepburns Road in Ashburton.

The impact of the two vehicles ripped the station wagon in half, and left the ute crumpled.

A fourth person was critically injured in the collision, and a fifth sustained moderate injuries.

Police couldn't confirm to Newshub if the deceased were members of the same family.

Nine people were killed on New Zealand's roads on Monday, making it the worst single-day death toll since 2003.
