Auckland's marvellous Monday sunrise: What's behind the heavenly sights

Monday mornings aren't always the worst.

Aucklanders have woken up this week to a stunning sunrise, flooding social media and the Newshub inbox with incredible photos of red and orange clouds.

"Simply stunning sunrise over Auckland this morning," Jason Bryant tweeted. "Hard not to take a pic when it's this good."

"Impossible to capture the magnificence of this morning's sunrise, but it made the dog walk a delight," Coast FM host Lorna Subritzky wrote on Instagram.

"The BEST sunrise on cycleway this morning," tweeted Jenny Jeffries.

Newshub reader Amanda Miller sent in a shot taken of the city's port.

WeatherWatch forecaster Philip Duncan told Newshub the dazzling sight's the result of a lot of high cloud above the city.

"Basically we have a huge high parked just east of New Zealand and a large low parked just near Australia. In between the two air pressure systems we have varying amounts of high cloud and in the morning especially (when the sun rises from the clearer skies to our east) it lights up this high cloud for a time and makes for some awesome colours."

He compared it to a "very slow-moving version of 'red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning'.

"The cloud that is being lit up like this is a precursor to a rain event likely to reach New Zealand this coming Sunday."

But until then, Aucklanders can expect to see more heavenly skies like these.
