Police release names of seven family members killed in Taupō crash

Police have formally named the victims of Sunday's fatal crash that killed eight people - seven of who were from the same family.

Margaret Luke, 35, and her partner David Poutawa, 42, were killed in the collision, along with five of their children.

Khyus Poutawa, 7, Akacia Poutawa, 8, Jahnero Poutawa, 10, Chanley Poutawa, 11, and Trinity Luke, 13, were all killed in the collision.

They are survived by their two brothers, David, nine and Legacy, 12. David was the only survivor from the crash, while Legacy was being looked after by a family member when the crash happened.

A Givealittle has been established by Simplicity Bereavement Services to help the boys' whānau raise them, as well as cover the tangi of their family members.

Grandmother Sherilyn Poutawa says their grief is immense.

"No words can fully describe the agony, the anguish that our whānau are experiencing at this time," she said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The sole occupant of the other car, Jenny Rodgers was also killed. She was 51.

A long-serving Scouts NZ member, Rodgers is survived by her husband, three daughters, mother and siblings.

Scouts NZ said their organisation was mourning the loss of a "caring and selfless" woman.

An investigation into the crash is on-going.
