On average one child dies every five weeks as a result of violence in New Zealand. Children under the age of one make up the majority of this statistic.
There are 150,000 reports of concern about children every year in New Zealand.
And children under the age of 18 make up 20 percent of all violent deaths in New Zealand.
In the six months to December 2018, there were more than 300 instances of neglect, or emotional, sexual or physical abuse - some of those at the hands of Oranga Tamariki staff members.
In a move to improve our shocking statistics, massive changes at Oranga Tamariki come into force in July. It is the biggest shake up to the sector in 30 years.
