All trains in Auckland are back up and running after being briefly stopped due to a signalling fault.

Auckland Transport announced the stoppage during rush hour at 8am on Wednesday morning, saying it's not known when they will be back in action.

"Trains across the rail network are not currently running due to a KiwiRail signalling issue. It is unknown at this stage when services will resume.

"Scheduled buses are accepting purchased train tickets and AT HOP cards. We will have more updates shortly."

It announced in a second tweet 30 minutes later the signalling issue had been resolved and services were slowly returning to normal.

It's the second time in less than a week the trains have been affected by a signalling issue, after they were put out of action for hours on Friday.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff lashed out at KiwiRail over the stoppage.

"A second KiwiRail signal failure on Auckland’s network is not good enough," he wrote on Twitter.

"I have asked KiwiRail for more information and sought assurance from its chair Greg Miller that infrastructure is fit for purpose."

Upset commuters shared their frustration on Twitter, slamming the frequency of train delays and lack of other options.

"Awful and worst performing public transport. Are you going to refund Uber invoice as no transport options from Homai," one person wrote.

"Once, ok maybe. Twice, annoying. But this is ridiculous. People are late to work, kids are late to school," another said.

"There are costs incurred everywhere for people who rely on these services and employers are far less sympathetic these days."
