Footage has emerged of a "spectacular" tornado off the North Island coast.
Stephen Comrie was driving along the Whangaehu Coast on Saturday morning when he saw a front of ominous black clouds.

Suddenly the tornado descended from the sky in front of them. He and his family pulled over to capture the weather event.
"Tornado off Whangaehu Coast! Had to pull over to see just outside the hall towards the coast, I can cross that off my bucket list!" he wrote on Facebook.
Comrie told Newshub it was a couple hundred metres tall and lasted for a few minutes.
"In person it was just amazing. It would have been pretty big," he says. "It just shows the true force of Mother Nature."
Tornadoes can blow out windows, lift roofs, break large branches off trees, generate dangerous flying debris and blow vehicles off the road.
If you see a tornado coming your way immediately get into a closet or small room, or in the bathtub, until it has passed.
