Treacherous large waves, chilly gales and heavy rain will continue to lash the country over the coming days.
New Zealand has been pounded by blasts of piercing winds, thunderstorms, hail and snow this week, and Metservice forecasts that the weekend doesn't look much better.
- Another blast of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail incoming
- Black ice and plummeting temperatures cause havoc in Otago
- Tornado rips through far North
A cold weather system will storm its way up the country on Friday, with strong gale force winds expected through to Sunday.
"If you live somewhere exposed to the southwesterlies, you'll need your raincoat to protect you from the wind chill as well as the showers, Metservice said.
There is a severe weather watch in place from Metservice for Southland, Clutha, Dunedin, and Stewart Island. Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and the eastern slopes of the Kaimais may also be in the firing line.
It will also likely be safer on land this weekend, as the blustering wind will generate large waves, potentially more than six metres.
Snow flurries to 700 metres should be expected on the Central Plateau on Friday.
Those in the east, particularly Gisborne, the Bay of Plenty, and the East Cape, should get some sun on Friday and won't likely be impacted by large seas.
