Police picked him up when called out to a family-harm incident at around 11:30pm last night.
They say he was intoxicated, arrested for assault and taken to the cells. Officers later found him "unresponsive" during a routine check.
Despite efforts to revive him by police staff and again by paramedics when they arrived, he couldn't be saved.
Central District Police Inspector Chris de Wattignar says police make every effort to keep people in custody safe. A postmortem will determine the cause of death.
Meanwhile, an Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) investigation concluded this week that police "failed in their legal duty of care" when a man who was arrested died in the Hawke's Bay Custody Unit in 2017.
