Auckland's Titirangi village has seen a sizeable decrease in its population of rats "as big as cats" - but now, its chicken could be next to go.
Rat traps and baiting by contractor Treescape have helped exterminate Titirangi's rodent population over the last few days.
Rats have been rampant in the village centre, hanging out in and around shops, cafes and carparks.
Total eradication is impossible due to the bush in Titirangi, but the goal is to reduce the numbers significantly.
Now, the Waitakere Ranges Local Board is thinking of targeting Titirangi's infamous chickens, a population which has increased in the last few years.
The village chickens have reportedly divided locals, with a number of residents wanting them to stay, and others wanting them gone.
Roosters seem to be the next target, with a number of locals complaining to the Local Board about the noise.
Waitakere Ranges Local Board chairman Greg Presland told Stuff that he wants Titirangi to be a sanctuary for native birds, rather than for rats, roosters and chickens.
Chicken control options are said to be discussed on July 11 at the local board business meeting.
