Two people are dead after a train hit a car in the Bay of Plenty.
The incident happened on Pongakawa School Rd, Pongakawa.
Fire services were alerted to the crash just after 8am on Wednesday and said two people had been killed and a further three people were trapped in the vehicle.
St John have since said that three people have now been transported to hospital. Two are in a serious condition and one is in a critical condition.
Three ambulances attended the scene and transported the victims to hospital by road.
No students from Pongokawa School were involved, the school confirmed.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and motorists are asked to avoid the area.
