Weather: When to expect calm, mild weather after rain, wind lashes parts of New Zealand

Wind is set to lash large parts of the country before a wild week is relieved by a calm and mild Sunday, weather experts say.

Strong south-westerlies are expected to continue until Saturday evening, while swells up to six metres high will affect many coastal areas until late on Sunday.

Friday has brought wild conditions to much of the country with thunderstorms in Northland, giant waves on the west coast, along with a dusting of snow on the Desert Road and Crown Range.

But as the weekend drawers closer night showers are expected to linger only in western areas of the North Island, Fiordland, Southland and Otago along with strong winds in those southern areas.

Saturday is expected to be warmer than average for most of the country, especially the North Island, despite the south-west flow, according to Weather Watch.

The top of the South Island and eastern parts of the North Island are looking fine and calm on Saturday. Both Tauranga and Nelson are expecting a fine and clear 17C, and Blenheim 16C.

Finally, the strong wind will fade away by Sunday, leaving most of the country bathed in calm and relatively warm conditions.
