Before and after: Explosion rips through Christchurch house, reducing it to rubble

Images from the aftermath of an explosion in Christchurch highlight the sheer destruction left in the wake of the blast.

One house was totally destroyed on Friday morning in the Northwood blast, with rubble propelled across the street.

Newshub has lined up the images from a reporter at the scene and those from Google Maps, taken in August 2012.

The contrast is stark when comparing the two images.

The house's roof has been completely destroyed and both front windows shattered, the yard covered in rubble.

Even the neighbour's house doesn't come out unscathed, its roof dented and rippled.

Six people have been injured in the blast, their condition ranging from critical to moderate. It's believed to have been caused by a gas explosion.

WorkSafe is investigating with police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
