A central Otago bar refused to serve a number of men on Saturday after they turned up with their faces painted black.

The men were asked to remove the paint when they arrived at Wanaka's Water Bar. A spokesperson for the business says the bar's management deemed it offensive.

A statement to Newshub said: "The males in question did as they were asked and were apologetic about the situation. They left shortly after this of their own accord and without any problems.

"We are confident that the matter was dealt with accordingly by management and staff and we do not wish to comment any further on the matter."

MC and rapper Andy Woodcock told Stuff there were about nine men wearing black paint.

"I got the biggest guy and walked him and his crew to the bathroom where they washed their faces."

The incident follows a Lions club in Hawera featuring half-a-dozen people with their faces painted black, at Tarankai's A&P parade in November.

Hawera Mt View Lions Club later apologised, saying they "got it wrong".
