Police are "shocked" by the number of drivers issued infringement notices in a two-hour period at one Wellington intersection.

On Wednesday, in a two-hour period at the intersection of Wellington's Taranaki St and Buckle St, 75 drivers were issued infringement notices for using their phones while driving.

"It is quite unbelievable and I am shocked by this," said sergeant Laurence Vautier, Wellington road police supervisor.

Vautier said those given notices during the road safety operation had been browsing social media and texting.

"Using a cell phone while driving for any reason is a major distraction, nothing on your phone is worth risking your life or someone else's life."

Three others received infringement notices for driving while not wearing a seatbelt.

"We are at a loss to understand why people aren't wearing their seatbelts," said Vautier.

"Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 60 percent in the front seat and 44 percent for back seat passengers - seat belts save lives, it’s that simple."

Police said wet weather meant driving conditions were poor, so taking extra care was necessary.
