Sir Edmund Hillary's son reveals what people didn't know about him

Sir Edmund Hillary's son Peter has revealed what people may not have known about his father ahead of what would have been his 100th birthday.

Sir Ed, the first man to climb Mt Everest, would have turned 100-years-old this Saturday.

While there's plenty we do know about Sir Ed, there was lots we may not have known, as Peter told The AM Show.

"He had a lot of opinions and views on all sorts of political types of issues," Peter said.

"For example, you were just talking about the gun buyback and he would have absolutely supported that, as I do.

"He supported women's issues - I'm talking back in the '70s."

Peter said Sir Ed believed in "people wanting to live the life they wanted" and to "be happy".

"He was a pretty progressive man," Peter told The AM Show.

Sir Ed evolved and wanted the best for his children, Peter said.

Peter also spoke of Sir Ed's relationship with his father, Percy.

"Percy Hillary was one of our Gallipoli veterans - he had what we would call today post traumatic stress disorder.

"He wanted a good, wholesome life for his kids."

Peter followed in his late father's footsteps and also climbed Mt Everest twice.
