Flooding: Levin, Ōhau roads closed, sandbags available for homes

Residents in Levin and Ōhau are being warned to stay off the roads after extensive flooding in the area.

On Saturday afternoon, Horowhenua District Council released a statement saying the Horowhenua District Emergency Operation Centre had been activated due to flooding.

Roads currently closed include Easton Way, Newport St, Okarito Ave, and Buller Rd.

One property has been flooded with sewage and self-evacuated, according to a statement from Civil Defence at 4:30pm.

"Council Officers are continuing to contact properties identified as at risk, but at this stage no one is needing assistance," it said.

"It is requested that the public stay off the roads, particularly in North East Levin. We are also asking the community to check on their neighbours, friends and family to see if they are ok," the council said.

The council is organising sandbags for houses at risk of flooding. Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Neighbourhood Support and other community groups are also involved.
