An Auckland man is serving a 19-month jail term after he was caught looking at child pornography on a ferry last year.

According to court documents, Aden Seymour Garlick was on a ferry to Half Moon Bay in March last year, when members of the public saw him looking at images on his mobile phone - namely of naked children.

Police were then notified and he was apprehended. His phone was seized, and data extracted from the phone showed he actively searched the internet for child porn, while trying to stay anonymous.

Of the images recovered from his phone, 530 showed "child sexualised posing", Judge David Harvey says.

Later, a PlayStation 4 and another two phones were seized, with a further nine images showing "child sexualised posing" and two images of adult and child sexual activity.

He faced Judge Harvey in the Manukau District Court on February 4, who said it was acknowledged by both police and his lawyer that they were "very serious" offences.

"Suffice to say that it is well recognised that this type of offending is not a victimless crime, but the photographs that you saw and that you used all involve real people and somewhere down the track there are unscrupulous individuals who are prepared to abuse children, take photographs of that abuse for the consumption of others among them yourself.

"I have to hold you accountable for your offending."

Garlick received a 19-month jail term, and upon his release, he is not allowed to possess consume or use any alcohol or drugs unprescribed.

He will also not be able to own, possess or use any electronic device capable of accessing the internet without the approval of a probation officer.
