SkyCity workers to strike

SkyCity workers have voted to go on strike and picket outside their workplace.

The workers are asking for penal rates on nights and weekends, which would give workers on "unsociable hours" higher wages.

Union members voted 94 percent to reject SkyCity's latest collective offer and 97 percent in favour of striking.

The strike will last from 5pm on Saturday to 8am on Sunday.

"SkyCity needs most of its workers at weekends and nights and makes most of its income during that time - but prefers to use the 'stick' rather than the 'carrot' to get staff at these times," Unite secretary Gared Hehir said.

The union says workers at SkyCity are put on rotating rosters regardless of family or personal situation and cannot be moved onto different hours.

"No one disputes that there have to be shifts at weekends and nights. The issue is SkyCity should be encouraging staff who can choose to work those shifts - recognising that not all hours are equal."

SkyCity has been approached for comment.
