Weather: Serious dumping of snow for the South Island this weekend

Another serious dumping of snow is set to hit the South Island this weekend, with warnings in place.

A warning is out for South Canterbury and North Otago - with falls down to 300 metres expected, and large amounts above 500m. A heavy rain watch is also in place.

Southland's Milford Rd has been told to expect between 30 and 50 centimetres.

MetService says wet weather will spread to most places this weekend. Meteorologist Claire Nickson said snow levels will lower early Saturday.

"There is a possibility of heavy snow above 400m for inland Canterbury and Otago, with smaller amounts possible at lower levels."

Road snowfall warnings are in place for the Lewis Pass, Arthur's Pass, Porters Pass, Haast Pass, Lindis Pass, Crown Range Rd, and State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Waitati.

MetService says the rest of the country can also expect a wet weekend, with heavy falls possible in Buller and parts of the upper North Island.

Meanwhile, WeatherWatch says eastern parts of the North Island look mostly dry.

"Next week a storm well south of NZ will help dredge up a colder southerly, mostly for the South Island, with wintry weather peaking on Tuesday then easing," WeatherWatch said in a statement.

Showers may be heavy with thunderstorms in Taranaki in Waikato at the weekend, WeatherWatch says.

"Gusty northwesterlies cover much of the North Island on Sunday."

Rain is forecast for Auckland on Sunday afternoon, with strong northwesterlies becoming stronger in the evening.
