Auckland has already experienced chaotic early spring weather after a rough and windy Tuesday night caused problems on the streets.
A large tree fell on Wellesley St in the CBD overnight, blocking the left westbound lane headed towards Hobson St.
Emergency services were called and it was removed by 9:35am.
NIWA said on Twitter the far eastern Bay of Plenty and Gisborne regions are likely to bear the brunt of the rainfall on Wednesday.
"Satellite-derived radar shows a flow of moisture-rich air headed into the far eastern BoP and Gisborne regions.
"This is where the heaviest rain is likely to fall today."
Forecaster WeatherWatch said in a statement changeable weather is all par for the course as spring arrives and winter ends.
"Expect the next several weeks to be changeable as they are very well known for being chaotic with temperatures going up and down like roller-coasters.
"Spring is all about winter slowly fading away - but hints of summer slowly coming in."
