It's time to get outside and make the most of the long weekend, with much of the country set for fine weather this Labour weekend.

Most of the country is set for fine weather on Saturday, with temperatures warmer than average for this time of year.

The South Island will see the biggest warm-up, with some places jumping up to 15C higher than they were on Thursday.

Temperatures are set to get close to the mid 20s in some centres, with a high of 24C forecast for Christchurch and 23C for Nelson, Dunedin and Invercargill. Queenstown is looking at a high of 21C, while Greymouth will be a bit cooler at 16C, according to the Met Service.

In the North Island, Whangarei is looking at a high of 20C, Auckland and Palmerston North will get to 18C, Hamilton 19C, Tauranga and Napier are both heading towards 21C, and Wellington a bit cooler at 16C.

Temperatures in most regions are warmer than average for this time of year by a few to several degrees, according to WeatherWatch.

Despite the good weather on Saturday, a burst of wind and rain is moving up the country, and although most regions escape the bad weather there will be some gales and mountain snow on the way for a few parts, reports WeatherWatch.

The bulk of the rough weather is forecast for the Southern Alps and Cook Strait areas.

The south of the South Island is set for rain on Sunday, while Christchurch will be fine with high cloud and strong northeasterlies in the afternoon. Further north in the South Island, Nelson too is set for fine weather, though there is a chance of evening showers.

Wellington will be cloudy with patchy drizzle on Sunday, with fine spells in the afternoon followed by evening showers and strong northerlies.

Further north, most places can expect a cloudy start to the day followed by fine weather.

On Monday, a slightly cooler air flow will move come into the mix, though temperatures in most parts will still be warmer than usual for this time of the year.

Most parts of the North Island can expect at least some rain on Monday, while most places in the north of the South Island and Queenstown are set for mainly fine weather.

The West Coast and the south of the South Island can expect cloudy weather with showers.
