A landslide near Greymouth has closed State Highway 7 for the weekend, and stopped the Tranz Alpine Express from getting to the West Coast.
The slip is at Omoto, between Greymouth and Stillwater, and the NZTA says "accelerated movement at the historic slip site" will mean the highway will remain closed until it is reassessed on Monday morning.
Footage from the area shows the damage the slip has caused, with train tracks twisted and buckled and left hanging in mid-air.
Rainfall caused an old slip to move down the hill towards the Grey River.
Rail passengers are being bused from Arthur's Pass, while motorists heading to Reefton will need to take a detour.
The detour is in place on the north side of the Grey River via Taylorville, NZTA said.
